   Opera Talk of the Month:

Opera in Ebony- Tribute to African American Opera Singers

Opera history is also Black history. Black History Month is full of many firsts in all genres including opera. The opera genre is quite controversial because of its appeal to a wealthy audience. This appeal makes opera seem to be a niche subject that doesn't adhere to the current social climate. Black singers who excelled in opera are special because they conquered a genre that reflects European ideals. This lecture will pay tribute to legendary African American singers who performed at prestigious venues like the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and the Royal Opera House. Sound clips featuring Marian Anderson, Leontyne Price, Paul Robeson, and George Shirley will be included. Click here to learn more about this opera talk.
