5. The Tragic Story of Blanchard’s Champion presented April 10, 2023

 Six-time Grammy winner Terence Blanchard returns to the Met stage in this thrilling staging of his first opera, Champion. Based on the tragedy of boxer Emile Griffith, and the fight that ultimately took someone’s life, this new production stars Ryan Speedo Green and Eric Owens as Emile Griffith, Latonia Moore as his estranged mother, and the renowned Stephanie Blythe as bar owner Kathy Hagan. Please join lecturer Tanisha Mitchell as they discuss the music and real life themes of this “Opera in Jazz.”
