Marian Anderson (1897-1993) is a cultural icon whose contralto voice broke through racial barriers in the operatic world and ultimately in American society. Her beautiful illustrious voice is most memorable through her controversial recital on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 and her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1955.

1939: Performed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial after being denied to perform at Constitution Hall because of race
1939: Awarded the NAACP Spingarn Medal
1955: Became the 1st black woman to perform at the Metropolitan Opera
Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963
Awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 1978
Honored with the National Medal of the Arts in 1986
Became a Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient in 1991
